ATV Maintenance Tips
ATVs, also known as quads or four wheelers, are built for tough riding over rugged terrain, and that means a lot of wear and tear over time. Regular maintenance will not only help your machine perform at its peak for years to come, but is also an important part of staying safe. You don’t want to experience a breakdown in the middle of a trail or on the job site, and there are many things you can do to maintain your ATV from the comfort of your own shed or garage. This is Team Mancuso Powersports Southwest’s beginner’s guide to ATV maintenance. Review Your Owner’s Manual
Please note that before trying anything on your own you should find your owner’s manual and review all of its recommendations and instructions. While this guide contains general information that applies to most models of quad, your manual is the only place where you can find certain details specific to your model. This includes important details like how and when to service your four wheeler, and sometimes even products that the manufacturer recommends be used with that particular model.
Oil
Your quad’s engine is much like that of a passenger car or truck in that the oil needs to be regularly changed. Oil prevents your engine’s components from grinding against each other. When inspecting the engine, you can easily discover if something is amiss by checking the oil for metal shavings. Also keep in mind that oil thickens over time, making it less effective as a lubricant. If your oil appears to be black or sludgy, it’s probably time for a change.
Changing the Filters
ATVs have filters to prevent harmful particles from getting inside the engine. You can use your oil to gauge when you need to swap filters. Every time you change your oil, you should change your oil filter as well. In contrast, your air filter only needs to be changed every three or four oil changes. The fuel filter, located just below the fuel tank, doesn’t need to be changed very often, but it is still a good idea to check it every once in a while, especially if you have an older vehicle.
Spark Plugs
Spark plugs provide the ignition in an internal combustion engine. If your engine is having problems turning over, take a look at the spark plugs. Luckily, removing your four wheeler’s spark plugs for a quick check is relatively easy. First, you need to disconnect the battery and remove the engine cover. You can then use a spark plug wrench to take out the plug. As you examine the plug, make sure the metal gaps are clean and dry and that the ceramic casing is still in one piece. If you have experience in engine maintenance, you can probably replace the spark plug yourself. Otherwise, you should leave the task to a professional mechanic.
