Beginner Riding Tips For Dirt Bikes
Congrats on purchasing your first dirt bike! While you’re likely looking forward to hitting the nearest off-roading course or nature trail, you’ll first need to master some of the basics. For tips on learning how to ride a dirt bike for the first time, check out our article below.
Practice Your Riding Position
If you’re traveling off-road with your dirt bike, be sure to practice your riding position before you tackle any tough terrain. Remember to keep your back straight, lean slightly over the handlebars, and keep your elbows up and out. You’ll also need to practice transitioning from a sitting riding position to a standing one.
Stopping & Starting
If this is your first time riding a dirt bike, you’ll need to take things slow! Don’t just release the clutch all at once or you’ll shoot forward and likely crash. Instead, gently release the clutch at the same time you engage the throttle, moving both in small increments as you get used to the speed. When you’re ready to come to a stop, release the throttle and re-engage the clutch at the same time. Use your foot brake to come to a quick stop once you’ve released your throttle.
Avoid the Hand Brakes
Your hand brakes will stop your motorcycle much faster than your footbrake. However, until you’ve mastered stopping at high speeds, we strongly recommend against using these brakes, as you’re likely to go flying over the handlebars if you’re not careful.
